Opening Doors – Fair Housing Resources

By Hilary King, Executive Director
Housing Research & Advocacy Center

Opening doors is something that the Housing Research & Advocacy Center and Akron Cleveland REALTORS® have in common. Anyone who has bought a home or worked with a REALTOR® to find a rental knows how essential a REALTOR® can be to their search. When a REALTOR® offers the broadest selection of homes, the client learns about all of their choices in the community and can make a well informed decision that meets their needs.

As a former REALTOR®, I know that the number of requirements for real estate transactions has grown considerably over the years. Many homeowners are also landlords for the first time and often are unaware of their fair housing responsibilities. The Housing Center works to promote housing choice in Northeast Ohio by providing effective research, education and advocacy. We offer free services for REALTORS® and other housing professionals including training, educational materials, and a Fair Housing Hotline, (216) 361-9861, to help with your questions.

All of our services are free for housing professionals and consumers. We recently released Fair Housing: Know Your Rights which was created through a generous grant from the Cleveland Foundation. It’s a consumer manual with lively pictures and graphics to help people understand their fair housing rights. Did you know the people who call us the most for advocacy services are people with disabilities, families with children, and African Americans? There is helpful information in the manual that you can share with all of your clients. Housing Center materials are available at no cost on our website. If you would like to have a few printed copies for your clients or office, please visit our office.

Being able to open doors for people is a true gift and privilege. As the spring season blossoms, I hope you remember, in the midst of the hustle and bustle, how truly important your work is.
