Local Legislative Update – June, 2014

Since the last legislative update, advocacy has been the name of the game for ACAR. Realtors® have been on the move protecting home ownership and private property rights in Columbus, as well as Washington, D.C.

At the end of April, the Ohio Association of Realtors® hosted its annual Spring Legislative Conference, which featured a reception for members of the General Assembly and Realtor® associations. Although the legislature was in recess, we were able to meet with Senator Tom Patton, as well as Representative Nickie Antonio.  Speakers throughout the conference included Auditor Dave Yost, Lt. Governor Mary Taylor, Brian Blaesser (Robinson & Cole), Tom Stewart (Vice President of the Ohio Oil & Gas Association), Speaker William Batchelder, President Pro Tempore Keith Faber, Tim Keen (Director of the Office of Budget & Management), Joe Testa (Ohio Tax Commissioner), Matthew Borges (Ohio Republican Party Chair), and Chris Redfern (Ohio Democratic Party Chair).

Just a couple weeks later, another contingency of ACAR members travelled to our nation’s capital to advocate for home ownership and private property rights.  While there, we met with Senator Sherrod Brown, as well as the top housing staffers for Representative Marcia Fudge, Rep. Dave Joyce, Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Rep. Jim Renacci, and Rep. Tim Ryan.

Conversations focused specifically on important issues impacting the real estate market here in the greater Cleveland – Akron area, including, preserving the mission and accessibility of Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Affairs home loan programs, protecting real estate-related tax policies, and reforming the secondary mortgage market.  ACAR representatives also urged Sen. Brown and other staff to reinstate an expired tax provision that provides relief to individuals following a loan modification, short sale or foreclosure.

Last but certainly not least, the first annual ACAR RPAC auction is in the books. The sold out event raised more than $36,000, and we could not have done it without the support of our sponsors, volunteers, and attendees.  We are now looking forward to the next fundraiser, YPN’s Hoedown on the Shore, on July 11th at Wendy Park.
