University Heights Council to Reconsider Rental Fee Hike

During a council meeting in late May 2018, the University Heights City Council approved an amendment to its rental registration, inspection and fee policy.

The new policy calls for annual inspections of rental properties and included a fee increase to $600 annually for a single family home; $800 for a two-family dwelling; and $200 for a rentable third floor unit. Previously, inspections were every other year with fees at about half the new rate.

The policy was set to take effect in June. However, dozens of University Heights landlords rallied against the new law at a June council meeting, and new Mayor Michael Brennan postponed implementation until September 2018. In the meantime, the Building Committee is holding a meeting on August 6, 2018, 7:00pm, in Council Chambers (2300 Warrensville Center Rd, University Heights, OH 44118), to discuss the ordinance. Although ACAR will have representatives from its Legislative Committee in attendance, Realtors and property managers working in University Heights are encouraged to attend.
