The Akron Cleveland Association of REALTORS (ACAR) is accepting applications for placemaking grants to support projects in Cuyahoga County or Portage County. A placemaking grant was awarded this summer to create a healing garden in Akron.

Placemaking means many things to different people, but ACAR looks at placemaking as a way to make communities better places to live by transforming unused and underused sites and “eyesores” into welcoming destinations accessible to everyone in a community. Placemaking projects are lighter, quicker, and affordable ways to create a community amenity.

Placemaking sites:

  • Create community gathering places
  • Attract residents and visitors
  • Bring life to downtowns
  • Support walkable communities
  • Preserve open and green spaces

Examples of placemaking projects:

Temporary parklets

Pop-up parks

Pedestrian plaza

Bike lanes

New parks

Pocket parks

Plazas

Permanent parklets

Alley activations

Trails

Dog parks

Play/fitness areas

Community gardens

Road diet demos

Free little libraries/food pantry

Application Process:

Municipalities and 501(c)3 non-profit organizations are invited to submit an application for a placemaking project that will be completed by early December 2021.

Applications are due October 1, 2021.

Winning applications will be announced the week of October 11, 2021.

The grant works on a reimbursement process. ACAR will reimburse the entity submitting the application upon completion of the project.
